The above photo highlights Team M3’s spirited beginning. At the 2005 LaSalle Bank Marathon, Foreman High School students volunteering at a water stop ask if they can run the marathon.
2005
- In 2005, Team M3 began as a participating charity of the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. Only adults ran in Team M3 as a fundraising effort to support the Marilyn G. Rabb Foundation.
- Students from Foreman High School supported the runners by assisting with a water stop during the 2005 marathon; as a result many students asked if they could run themselves.
2006
- In 2006, after ensuring student safety and selecting an appropriate training program for student distance runners, Team M3 was opened to students from Foreman High School, a Chicago Public High School.
- As the MGR Foundation’s mission is based on individuals investing their time in direct service, the fundraising aspect of Team M3 was eliminated and in its place, adults on Team M3 served as mentors for student runners.
2007
- In 2007, all 23 Team M3 Student Runners completed the Chicago Distance Classic. While the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon was called due to extreme heat, several student and mentor pairs did finish, and all remaining students and mentors remained healthy and on the course as the race was called.
2008
- Team M3~Chicago Student MentorRun expands to reach students at three Chicago Public Schools including Foreman High School, North Grand High School and Carver Military Academy.
- Every student and mentor of Team M3 completes the Chicago Distance Classic, a total of 68 student runners.
- Nike Inc., has pledged long-term support for Team M3 including an in-kind donation of shorts, shoes and shirts for all mentors and students, as well as entries into the Nike Human Race.
- Over 80% mentors from 2007 have returned, Team M3 has added new mentors for the 2008 season to accommodate the expansion to three schools.
- Several mentors are former Team M3 Student Runners who have graduated from Foreman High School and have returned to support their younger peers. Additionally several mentors are teachers of Team M3 Student Runners.
- September 2008, Team M3~Chicago Student MentorRun receives the FY 2008 Latino Youth Mentoring Program Grant from the Department of Justice.
- October 13, 2008, 32 students and 35 mentors completed the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
